A showpiece theme and variations on the children’s folk song for solo euphonium, celebrating different styles of Mexican music and groups, including mariachi, banda, and the 80s-90s group Timbiriche. Commissioned by Loke Lovett.

Five Suns/Quinto Sol

for narrator + Pierrot ensemble (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano)
Five Suns retells an epic Aztec myth of creation, destruction, and rebirth, with the narrator and musicians working together to paint a sonic picture of the characters and events. A group of gods attempt to build a new world, led by wise Quetzalcóatl, god of wind. But tricky Tezcalipoca, god of chaos, has other ideas in mind….
